Fearrington Village Wedding
What can couples look forward to most on their wedding day?
Getting married! But seriously – it’s the whole point, right? All the months of work – planning, coordinating, etc. – culminates in this big day of celebration! You’ll get to enjoy being with family and friends, but it’s also about the commitment you’re making to one another. It’s pretty amazing to look over to your partner and be able to call them your husband or wife at the end of the day!
Tell me about one of the most memorable moments of your wedding weekend.
So many of our friends gave us the same piece of advice, which was to try to take a moment to sit back and enjoy the day. We made sure to schedule some time after our meal and before the speeches for photos around Fearrington – in time for sunset in August and catching those last bits of light! It gave us time to catch up on the events of the day and really get to spend some 1×1 time together – which was so special. The week leading up to the wedding was so busy, with our own travel plus meeting all of our out-of-town guests. So, it was nice to be able to take a stroll on our own and check in with each other, savouring the events of the day and knowing that we have our future to look forward to.
What was one of your most meaningful wedding details?
Though it may have gone unnoticed by most guests, the table leading into our reception with all of the guest place cards also included an important display – photos of our respective grandparents. Of the eight, only one is still with us – Joseph’s granny is now a youthful 92! But unfortunately, she wasn’t able to join us for the big day given the difficulty of traveling from Ireland. It was important for us to feel that our grandparents were with us on our big day – in spirit and thought. So it was nice to have their images with us as a reminder of their journeys that, in part, brought us to that day! In keeping with the theme of the journey, our wedding invitations, welcome bags, and even table names reflected places that both of us had lived at various stages in our lives, culminating in the wedding venue! Even though Joseph is from Ireland and Divya was born in India and grew up in North Carolina, our paths crossed and we were lucky enough to find one another!
What was the biggest challenge of your day?
The day will absolutely fly by – it’s so tough to get time with everyone who is there to celebrate with you, even if you have a “day of” schedule that is scheduled almost to the minute (trust us!). When the lights came on in the barn at Fearrington at 5 minutes to midnight, we looked at each other in shock – we couldn’t believe the day was over! You’ll be busy getting ready, taking photos, greeting guests, eating cake (hopefully!), making speeches, and dancing. You won’t have time to personally greet and catch up with every guest, and don’t worry – they’ll understand!
What’s one piece of advice you’d give a couple for their wedding day?
You’ve probably put in so much work – try not to be stressed about little details on the actual wedding day. It’s easy to say and maybe not so easy to do, but it’s the truth. Everyone will want to help you – whether you have an on-site coordinator/planner, siblings, parents, friends – take them up on it so you can focus on enjoying the day. And if not everything goes according to plan, it’s OK. It’ll be something that only you notice, or it will make for a funny story in the future!
What else do you want to tell us about your wedding experience?
Wedding planning can be really daunting – we were doing it from abroad (London), and every once in awhile, we considered abandoning plans to just do something very simple, or even elope. However, we were reminded by some friends that your wedding is one of the few times in your life that you are surrounded by your collective group of family and friends – people who love you and want nothing but the best for you. When else do you have the opportunity to celebrate with these people, all in the same place at the same time?! It’s a pretty amazing feeling to look out at your guests and realise that they’re there for you. That’s one of the lasting impressions of the wedding that we still feel lucky about, almost two years later.
